Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, popularly known as PM-KISAN, is one of India''s most impactful direct benefit transfer programmes. Launched on 1 February 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it provides financial assistance of ₹6,000 per year to eligible farmer families, transferred directly into their bank accounts in three equal installments of ₹2,000 every four months. Since its launch, the scheme has disbursed over ₹2.8 lakh crore to more than 11 crore beneficiaries across the country.

Who Is Eligible for PM-KISAN?

The scheme covers all landholding farmer families across India. A "farmer family" is defined as a family comprising of husband, wife and minor children who collectively own cultivable land as per the land records of the concerned state/UT. However, the following categories are not eligible:

  • Former and current holders of constitutional posts (President, Vice-President, Ministers, MPs, MLAs, etc.)
  • Former and serving employees of state and central government (excluding Multi-Tasking Staff/Group D employees)
  • All superannuated/retired pensioners receiving a monthly pension of ₹10,000 or more
  • Professionals such as doctors, engineers, lawyers, chartered accountants registered with professional bodies
  • Individuals who paid income tax in the last assessment year
  • Institutional landholders

Farmers owning small plots under 2 hectares were initially the primary target group, but in June 2019, the scheme was universalized to cover all farmer families regardless of landholding size.

How to Register for PM-KISAN

Registration is straightforward and can be done through multiple channels:

Online Registration: Visit pmkisan.gov.in and click on "New Farmer Registration." You will need to enter your Aadhaar number, mobile number, and state. Fill in the required details including land records (survey number, khasra number, khata number) and bank account details. Submit the application for verification by your local revenue officer or Patwari.

Through CSC: Visit your nearest Common Service Centre (Jan Seva Kendra). The CSC operator will complete the registration on your behalf. Carry your Aadhaar card, land documents, and bank passbook.

Through State Government Portals: Many states have their own agriculture department portals integrated with PM-KISAN. Check your state''s official agriculture department website for the direct registration link.

Mandatory e-KYC — Critical Step

Since 2022, e-KYC (electronic Know Your Customer) has been made mandatory for receiving PM-KISAN installments. Farmers who have not completed e-KYC will not receive their payments, even if they are registered beneficiaries. To complete e-KYC:

  • OTP-based e-KYC: Visit pmkisan.gov.in, click "e-KYC," enter your Aadhaar number, and verify with the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
  • Biometric e-KYC: If your mobile number is not linked to Aadhaar, visit a CSC centre for biometric (fingerprint) verification.
  • Face Authentication: Download the PM-KISAN app and use the face authentication feature to complete e-KYC from your smartphone.

Installment Schedule in 2026

PM-KISAN installments are released three times a year. The approximate schedule for 2026 is:

  • 1st Installment: April – July 2026
  • 2nd Installment: August – November 2026
  • 3rd Installment: December 2026 – March 2027

The exact release date of each installment is announced by the Prime Minister''s Office, often with a formal disbursement event. Funds are credited directly to beneficiaries'' Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts via PFMS (Public Financial Management System).

Common Issues and How to Resolve Them

Payment not received despite registration: Ensure your bank account is seeded with Aadhaar. Visit your bank branch to link Aadhaar to your account. Also verify that your land records match the details in the PM-KISAN database.

Name mismatch between Aadhaar and bank records: Visit your bank branch to correct the name, or update it in Aadhaar. This is one of the most common reasons for payment failure.

Incorrect account number: Contact your nearest agriculture department office or CSC to initiate a correction request through the state nodal officer.

Registration rejected: If your registration has been rejected, the specific reason is shown in the beneficiary status portal. Common rejection reasons include land disputes, ineligibility criteria violations, or incomplete land records.
