Education is the most powerful tool for social mobility, and the Indian government has built an extensive scholarship ecosystem to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent deserving students from pursuing their academic dreams. In 2026, over 50 scholarship schemes are available at the central government level alone, collectively disbursing thousands of crores to lakhs of students every year. This guide covers the most important central government scholarships and how to apply for them through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP).

National Scholarship Portal (NSP) — Your Gateway

The National Scholarship Portal (scholarships.gov.in) is the single integrated platform for all central government scholarships and many state government scholarships. Students must register on NSP using their Aadhaar number, and then apply for all applicable scholarships through one common application. As of 2026, NSP hosts over 100 scholarship schemes and has facilitated disbursements to over 1.5 crore students annually through Direct Benefit Transfer.

1. Pre-Matric Scholarships for SC/ST Students

The Pre-Matric Scholarship for SC students covers students from Class 9 and 10 studying in government or recognized private schools. The scholarship provides a maintenance allowance ranging from ₹150 per month (day scholars) to ₹750 per month (hostellers), along with an ad-hoc grant of ₹500–₹750 per annum for books and stationery. For ST students, a separate pre-matric scholarship covers Classes 1–10 with slightly different benefit amounts. Both schemes require the student to belong to a SC or ST family with annual income not exceeding ₹2.5 lakh.

2. Post-Matric Scholarships for SC/ST Students

Post-Matric Scholarships for SC and ST students are among the most significant financial support mechanisms for higher education. These scholarships cover students pursuing Class 11 onwards, including undergraduate, postgraduate, professional degrees, and technical courses. Benefits include full tuition fee reimbursement (subject to limits), maintenance allowance (₹530–₹1,200 per month for day scholars and ₹1,000–₹1,600 for hostellers depending on course level), book allowance, and study tour charges.
